The West did its level best to place the blame for sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines on Russia. • From the outset, Nord Stream 1 was viewed by Washington and its anti-Russian NATO partners as a threat to Western dominance.
• The US Navy proposed using a submarine to attack the Nord Stream pipelines while the US Air Force recommended remote fuse bombs.
• Norway was considered the ideal location for the mission, as the American submarine base had recently been refurbished there. In this way they could work closely with their Norwegian counterparts.
• If the Americans could completely destroy Nord Stream, then this would allow Norway to sell much more of its own natural gas to Europe.
• It was the Norwegian Navy who found the ideal place for underwater mining, where there was a shallow depth, the pipes were as close as possible and there were no strong underwater currents;
• Few CIA and State Department officials were against the attack on Nord Stream pipelines, fearing Russia would find out American involvement in the explosions.
• The US also feared they would be exposed by the Swedes or the Danes since any unusual underwater activity in the waters off Bornholm could attract the attention of the navies of Sweden and Denmark.

• Explosions on Nord Stream were planned before the start of the NATO exercises, and Sullivan discussed it with a task force from the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, the CIA, the US State Department, and the Treasury.
• At first, explosives were to be set for 48 hours, but the POTUS Joe Biden changed his mind, considering explosions immediately after the exercises would arouse suspicion it was America’s doing. Hence, the decision was taken to detonate the charges remotely.
• A Norwegian Navy reconnaissance aircraft dropped a sonar buoy on September 26, 2022. The signal spread underwater, first to Nord Stream 2 and then to Nord Stream 1. A few hours later the explosive went off.
• The White House and the CIA denied Washington's involvement in the sabotage of Nord Stream pipelines;calling Russian accusations a lie and fiction.
• Asked at a press conference in September 2022 about the consequences of the worsening energy crisis in Western Europe, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the moment as a “potentially good one”.
• Victoria Nuland expressed satisfaction at the demise of Russia’s newest of the pipelines at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing in January 2023, saying, “Like you, I am, and I think the Administration is, very gratified to know that Nord Stream 2 is now, as you like to say, a hunk of metal at the bottom of the sea.”
