US Navy deploying laser weapon prototype

April 12, 2013

The US Navy has announced that it will deploy a new laser technology that will allow the military to target threats without the use of bullets and explosives.

The solid-state laser will be added to the USS Ponce in fiscal 2014. Since June 2012, the ship has been stationed in the Central Command area, which covers the Persian Gulf, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Iraq.

The laser was temporarily installed on the USS Dewey guided-missile destroyer in San Diego and the Navy recently tested the technology on an unmanned craft. The lasers run on electricity, so they can be fired as long as its ships have power, a helpful way to target swarming small boats and unmanned aircraft. The strength of the laser can be manipulated from non-lethal disabling and deterrence all the way up to destruction.
