The eighth edition of the Admiral's Cup Regatta, a prestigious annual international sailing event hosted by Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala will be conducted at Ettikulum Bay from 03 December to December 7, 2017. The Regatta will see trainees from 29 International Naval Academies compete in sailing at Ettikulum Bay on Laser (Radial) class sail boats.
The Indian Navy instituted the 'Admiral's Cup Regatta' as a 'Fleet Race' in a single crew Olympic class 'Laser Radial' sail boat in the year 2010 with eight International Naval Academies participating in that year. Naval Academies of friendly foreign countries across the world were invited to participate in the eighth edition of Admiral's Cup Regatta 2017.
This year would witness participation from twenty nine foreign countries viz., Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Canada, Egypt, Fiji, France, Germany, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nigeria, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States of America and Vietnam in addition to India. In terms of number of participants, this year's Admirals Cup Regatta has the highest number of participant in the world for any military sailing competitive event. The closest was during the 2011 Military World Games held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with 26 countries participating during that event. The participating teams will be competing in 16 races spread over four days with each country being represented by two boats. The coveted 'Admiral's Cup' would be awarded to the best team winning the championship on the basis of their combined performance. In addition, individual medals will also be awarded. The Admiral's Cup Regatta 2016 was won by Singapore.
The teams are scheduled to arrive INA on Saturday, December 2, 2017. The registration of team members, practice racing and opening ceremony are scheduled on Sunday, December 3, 2017. The competitive races are scheduled from December 4-7, 2017. Admiral's Cup Regatta 2017 is expected to be much more exciting and challenging with the highest ever number of countries participating in the event and first time participation of teams from Iran, Russia, Philippines and Vietnam.
